The BC Humanist Association has received funding through Canada Summer Jobs to hire three people to join our team this summer.

The BCHA promotes education about secular humanism and researches issues relating to human rights and secularism.

All Positions

Status: Full-time (35 hours per week), summer (8 weeks), $16 per hour

Dates of employment: July 4 to August 26, 2022

Requirements for all positions:

  • Between 15 and 30 years of age
  • Canadian Citizen, permanent resident or refugee under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act
  • Legally entitled to work in British Columbia

Social Policy Researcher

Two candidates to be hired

Job description: The Social Policy Researchers will be responsible for assisting several ongoing research projects involving legislative prayer practices, religious property tax exemptions, religion in public and private schools and crisis pregnancy centres. Tasks will include:

  • Contributing to the writing of public research reports
  • Researching municipal and school board practices and policies
  • Reviewing and filing freedom of information requests
  • Surveying and interviewing former politicians
  • Promoting reports on social media
  • Supporting the development of the BCHA research agenda
  • Other research tasks as assigned

Work will primarily be performed remotely, with regular check ins via Zoom or Google Meet. There may be some opportunities for in person meetings at a central coworking locations.

Qualifications:

  • Experience working with (or ability to quickly learn) online collaboration tools such as Microsoft Office 365, Google Docs, Slack and video conferencing tools
  • High reading comprehension skills
  • Strong writing abilities
  • Ability to work independently
  • Experience with social media platforms (Twitter, Facebook and Instagram)
  • Fluent in English

Marketing Coordinator

Job description: The Marketing Coordinator will be responsible for supporting and expanding our online content and programming. A particular focus will be on expanding programming for the underserved communities and developing procedures that can be replicated outside Metro Vancouver. Specifically, the Marketing Coordinator will:

  • Generate content for BCHA website and social media
  • Work with the research team to release and promote public reports
  • Promote BCHA content via Google and Facebook Ads
  • Support the BCHA’s presence at community events such as the Vancouver Pride Parade
  • Support the development of new programs to reach underserved communities

Work will primarily be performed remotely, with regular check ins via Zoom or Google Meet. There may be some opportunities for in person meetings at a central coworking locations. Ideally the Marketing Coordinator will be present for the BCHA’s entry in the Vancouver Pride Parade and Festival in the West End on July 31, 2022.

Qualifications:

  • Experience working with (or ability to quickly learn) online collaboration tools such as Microsoft Office 365, Google Docs, Slack and video conferencing tools
  • Strong and engaging writer
  • Public speaking experience
  • Experience with social media platforms (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and TikTok)
  • Experience with online event planning
  • Ability to work independently
  • Fluent in English
