Religious Neutrality Day 2026

April 15 marks the anniversary of the 2015 Supreme Court of Canada's decision in MLQ v Saguenay that ruled that prayers at municipal council meetings unconstitutionally violated the state's duty of religious neutrality.

Starting in 2025, the BC Humanist Association has marked the anniversary with Religious Neutrality Day as a way to speak to the importance of secularism across Canada. The Cities of Ottawa and Vancouver have proclaimed April 15, 2026, as Religious Neutrality Day.

This year, the BCHA is using the day to reflect on the tensions and differences between the government's duty of religious neutrality and the approach taken by the Government of Quebec through its policies on laicity (laïcité). Join our livestream to learn more about our latest report.
