Help us defend secularism at the Supreme Court of Canada

The BC Humanist Association (BCHA), in a joint effort with the Canadian Secular Alliance, is seeking your urgent support to intervene in a critical case at the Supreme Court of Canada: English Montreal School Board, et al. v. Attorney General of Quebec, et al.

This case challenges Quebec's controversial Bill 21, the Act respecting the laicity of the State; a law that profoundly impacts religious freedom and the principle of state neutrality in Canada. We need to raise $7,000 to cover our legal costs for this vital intervention.

Bill 21, enacted in 2019, prohibits certain public employees from wearing religious symbols while at work. What's particularly concerning is that the Quebec government used the "notwithstanding clause" to override people's fundamental rights and freedoms. The Supreme Court of Canada is now set to consider its constitutionality.

By supporting our intervention, you'll help us argue that a truly secular state protects individual religious freedom by remaining neutral, not by dictating how or when religious beliefs can be expressed. We must prevent the government from becoming an "arbiter of religious doctrine" – a dangerous precedent for all Canadians, regardless of their belief (or lack thereof).

Every dollar you contribute brings us closer to defending fundamental rights and upholding genuine secularism in Canada. Please donate today and help us reach our $7,000 goal to ensure our voice is heard at the highest court in the country.

If we exceed our goal, your support will help us continue to promote the state's duty of religious neutrality.
