In 2019, the Government of Quebec passed the Act respecting the laicity of the State. It prohibited certain public employees from wearing religious symbols in the exercise of their functions. The Quebec National Assembly invoked the notwithstanding clause (s 33) of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms in an attempt to shield the law from judicial scrutiny.
