We're ramping up the pressure on the three municipalities that haven't committed to end prayers in future inaugural council meetings.
Today, the BCHA wrote to the mayors and councillors of Delta, Parksville and Vancouver asking for confirmation that the three cities would respect the duty of religious neutrality defined by the Supreme Court of Canada. This follows our November 30 letters to the chief administrator of each city. Read our letters here.
We've already heard back from the other four communities we identified as having prayers in their 2022 inaugural meetings. Belcarra adopted a resolution to keep prayer out of all future meetings and Colwood, Tumbler Ridge and West Kelowna each said they'd review the court's rulings.
If you live in Delta, Parksville or Vancouver, we ask that you write your mayor and ask that future inaugural council meetings be secular.
Email Delta Mayor George Harvie
Email Parksville Mayor Doug O'Brien
Note: Thanks to everyone who wrote to their mayors. We have since received commitments from the Cities of Delta, Parksville and Vancouver that future meetings will be secular. Therefore, we've turned off our letter-writing tools but are preserving this page.
