Williams Lake rejects anti-choice proclamation

Following pressure from the Abortion Rights Coalition of Canada and local pro-choice activists, the city of Williams Lake, BC has rejected a request to proclaim "Celebrate Life Week." This victory comes after the city council had rubber-stamped the proclamation for several years. The council is now set to review their proclamation policy.

The Choice for Life Society of Williams Lake, who requested the proclamation, is an explicitly religious organization, with numerous Bible quotes on its website. The BC Humanist Association has previously protested against anti-choice proclamations in Kamloops and Kelowna as local governments should remain secular and not support efforts to roll back women's rights.

Read the excellent letter from the Abortion Rights Coalition of Canada to the City of Williams Lake which sets out why anti-choice proclamations should be rejected.
