Humanists tell Health Committee to retain science and health protections

The BC Humanist Association is calling on members of the House of Commons Standing Committee on Health to protect Canadians from unregulated supplements and vitamins by rejecting Bill C-224.

The private members bill would exempt natural health products from regulations that apply to other therapeutic products, such as traditional pharmaceuticals. A number of poison control agencies, public health bodies, and pharmacists have come out against the bill.

The BCHA argues for the committee to reject the bill based on humanism's commitment to science and evidence. It asks MPs to put consumer protections ahead of corporate profits.

“When it comes to natural health products and other widely used substances, strict regulations are needed to keep Canadians safe,” said BCHA Engagement Officer Elena Kugelstadt. “Removing existing standards will likely cause harm. Ample research supports the protections currently place, and it is crucial listen to health and safety experts.”

The Committee's hearings into the bill will continue later this week.
