The BC Humanist Association is calling on MPs to defeat Bill C-218 when it comes up for a vote on October 7, 2026.
This private member's bill would permanently exclude people whose sole underlying medical condition is a mental disorder from accessing medical assistance in dying (MAID).
Parliament has previously indicated plans to allow those suffering from mental illnesses and mental disorders to access MAID; though implementation has been repeatedly delayed. This bill would enshrine in law discrimination against people with mental disorders.
"Suffering is suffering, whether its physical or mental," said BCHA Executive Director Ian Bushfield. "Everyone should have the right to a dignified life - and a dignified death."
The BCHA is calling on supporters to ask their MP to vote against this bill to protect the future of MAID access.
Canadians deserve better mental healthcare, but denying rights to the people most affected does nothing to help them.
