The BC Humanist Association welcomes news that Canada's national anthem is now officially gender neutral.
The Senate passed bill C-210 yesterday, officially changing the line "in all thy sons command" to "in all of us command." The bill now awaits Royal Assent before becoming law.
Ian Bushfield, Executive Director, BC Humanist Association:
This news, in time for the Winter Olympics, is a valuable symbolic step toward equality in Canada. It shows that changes to these symbols are possible and, with time, we expect that the anthem will no longer presume a belief in god.
In February 2016, we called on the government to extend the bill to remove religious references from the anthem.
