ATHEISTS GIVE GENEROUSLY TO FIGHT BLOOD CANCER
Over $3750 raised by the BC Humanists
20 October 2012 – Local atheists and skeptics raised $3,778 for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society as part of an international effort to raise money for the Light the Night Walk.
Fifteen members of the BC Humanist Association’s team have been raising money throughout the summer in preparation for their walk this evening in Stanley Park.
The BC Humanist Association is walking in partnership with the Foundation Beyond Belief, an American charity that coordinates philanthropy and volunteering among non-believers. Over $300,000 has been raised by freethought teams across North America.
As part of their North American efforts, the Stiefel Foundation has pledged to match donations up to $500,000. Vancouver-based atheists have therefore ensured that over $7,500 will go to fight blood cancers.
The BC Humanists are walking in honour of Christopher Hitchens, author of god is not Great, who died in 2011 of esophageal cancer.
Since 1984, the BC Humanist Association has represented atheists, agnostics, and secular humanists across the province. Its vision is a secular society based on the universal values of reason and compassion.
