No funding for anti-choice, anti-LGBTQ2+ groups

The government recognizes that women’s rights are human rights. This includes sexual and reproductive rights — and the right to access safe and legal abortions. These rights are at the core of the Government of Canada’s foreign and domestic policies.

The government recognizes that everyone should have the right to live according to their gender identity and express their gender as they choose, free from discrimination. The government is committed to protecting the dignity, security, and rights of gender-diverse and transgender Canadians.

We agree.

The federal government has made recognizing these rights a requirement to receive funding from the Canada Summer Jobs program.

Groups that promote anti-choice, homophobic and transphobic ideologies are now ineligible for this funding. Many conservative religious groups are protesting and threatening to sue the government, since they won't receive this funding anymore to promote their bigotry.

The Government of Canada should not be funding groups that seek to undermine the rights of women, the LGBTQ2+ community or other Canadians.

It's an affront to the dignity of marginalized groups to provide public money to organizations that would seek to undermine their hard-won rights.

We applaud the Government of Canada's recent decision to require groups applying for the Canada Summer Jobs program to be consistent with human rights, including reproductive rights and the rights of transgender Canadians.

We urge the Government to maintain this requirement and to continue to stand up for human rights.
