Why join a Humanist Association?
Freethinkers often pride themselves on their independence, and many are content to hold their beliefs in private. Some are reluctant to acknowledge their naturalistic worldview openly, for fear of offending a parent, spouse or employer. Others are simply not interested in joining groups mainly devoted to discussion, fellowship or activism.
These reasons to remain a “closet Humanist” may be warranted, but none help to further the acceptance of Humanist principles in a society, still mired in the beliefs of a pre-scientific era. Humanists, or atheists - agnostics if you would prefer - are one of the largest identifiable groups in Canada yet we are still considered politicaly unrepresentable. If we do not work together to ensure our right to live without faith in a deity, miracles or supernatural powers, who will? If you agree that religious faith does not ensure moral conduct or personal worth, that religious leaders (in or out of politics) should not dictate public policy, reproductive practices, school curricula or medical treatment, then you can help fellow Humanists change many existing attitudes and practices. If you support secular ethics and human rights – regardless of gender, ethnicity, sexual preference or skin colour - your active participation in a Humanist group adds your voice to those working toward these ends. Understanding, these issues and taking appropriate action requires the effort, time, skills and resources that only a group can provide.
In a lighter vein, many Humanists simply enjoy meeting and being with other Humanists. Why not join them? The first step toward implementing your Humanist convictions is easy. Simply drop us a line at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it
